About me

I'm Alice, maker/artist behind Bread & Roses Handcrafts. I work in my little studio (a former Lifeguard hut) at my home in Co. Mayo, where I live with my husband and daughter. When I'm not making or painting, I like to grow food and herbal teas, like chamomile, mints, and lemon balm, which I dehydrate to drink all year round. The garden is a place where our family can work and learn together, and cooking with our own homegrown food is a huge added bonus!
I called my business Bread & Roses Handcrafts after the poem, Bread and Roses, and in particular my favourite line, "Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses."  I have previously worked in non-profits, in retail and marketing, but for me working creatively is what feeds my heart, as well as my body. I find great joy in beautiful everyday objects, and even more so if I can make them with sustainable or recycled materials. I love so many different crafts and could never decide to do just one, so my shop is always full of new and varied things, often reflecting the things I love most- plants, books, tea, journalling, and bright, expressive style.
